Peter Allen
(Parasol Puppets)
Perfectly Formed Puppet Heads from Pre-Formed Plastic Shapes
Inspiration for puppet heads can be derived from easily obtained plastic shapes such as soda bottles, eggs, toy footballs and other sports shapes, drinking cups, plastic fruits and vegetables, and much, much more. Many examples will be displayed of entire shows built by PARASOL PUPPETS (Peter Allen & Debbie Lutzky Allen) using this technique.
In this workshop, we will first explore and defeat all possible ways to use plastic shapes to create a basic head shape. We will then secure our final design with the judicious use of plastic shapes, masking tape, hot glue and paper mache. Participants will each complete one puppet head and hopefully begin work on the entire cast of their puppet show. Peter will also demonstrate and work with participants to enable them to use various finishing techniques for these heads, including painting and gluing both cloth and fur fabric. Eyes, facial features, details and textures will be explored.
The goal of this workshop is to encourage puppet builders to see the potential and unlimited possibilities of cheap and easily found shapes. We all need to be reminded to play with and explore different sizes, shapes and techniques while building our puppets. Try something new! You don't always need to use expensive materials to create the effect that you want. Don't be ashamed that it's cheap as long as it is dramatically effective and artistically satisfying.

Notes - Participants must be aware that this workshop is definitely hands-on and probably messy. Bring a smock to protect clothing. A glue gun (low temp), cheap scissors for cardboard and plastic cutting, good scissors for fabric cutting, box cutting knife and hacksaw blade would also be helpful if you can bring them or else be prepared to share and wait. Glue sticks will be provided. It would be appreciated if participants would already have ideas for characters or cast that they would like to create in this workshop. Or just come and play and see what happens!
